Stylistically very close to the one sold by Bonhams (Asian Art sale, 13-14 May 2024) – lot 197 – A SOAPSTONE CARVING OF SHOULAO, 17th/18th century, inscribed 1734. Height: 26 cm / approx. 10 inches.

Fascinating antique relief moulded Chinoiserie brush pot depicting a classic scene with Liu Hai trying to capture the three-legged toad hiding in the rocks. Base stamped with a faint number 204 and an impressed mark on the rim with a crown at the top, reminiscent of those used by Minton or Royal Worcester. Really interesting piece. Any info welcome! Very interesting antique plaster model of the famous sancai glazed life-sized luohan statue in the collections of the British Museum (object 1913,1221.1). Base with impressed inscription: LOHAN, CHINESE, T’ANG DYNASTY 618–906 AD (now thought to be a slightly later Liao dynasty example). Really unique antique Burmese wooden statue of kinnara/kinnaya. Originally possibly part of a piece furniture or something similar. Believed to come from the Himalayas, they often watch over the well-being of humans in times of trouble or danger. In Southeast Asian Buddhist mythology, kinnaris, the female counterpart of kinnaras, are depicted as half-bird, half-woman creatures. Height: 29 cm.
