A FAMILLE ROSE SEAL AND A JADEITE SEAL, 19th/20th century

The jadeite seal of cylindrical form with a domed terminal, carved with the characters Ju Rentang zhi; the famille rose seal of rectangular form, painted to the sides with orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum blossom, moulded with the characters mei hua wu.

TWO BLUE AND WHITE ‘DRAGON’ SNUFF BOTTLES, Late Qing Dynasty

Comprising: a blue and white cylindrical snuff bottle with a wide flat rim painted in the round with a prancing dragon turning to observe a flaming pearl; and a copper red and underglaze blue snuff bottle with two confronting dragons either side of a flaming pearl, one in flight, and the other emerging from the waves below, among flames and clouds. 10cm (3 15/16in) high. A Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll painting), with a long kanshi (a Japanese poem written in Classical Chinese) about a youth of immense ambition who strides toward high office rather than enduring humiliation, possessing a spirit that ‘swallows the mountains and rivers’, signed Shoin and ‘a seventy-six year old man’; in a tomobako (wood box) inscribed Goto Shoin and describing the poem as a five-character quatrain in Japanese and Chinese style; together with a Chinese fan painting depicting a snowy landscape, in ink and colour on paper, signed Banyi and dated Gengxu year; 131cm x 28cm and 51cm. Fine Chinese Antique Enamelled Silver Round Box Wen Hua Mark Late Qing Republic

Interesting antique Chinese enamelled silver round box with repousse decoration featuring auspicious bats and dragons chasing after flaming pearls. Stamp to the base is hard to read but it appears to be 文華 ‘Wen Hua’ as far as we can tell. Metal is white where it is scratched and worn around the edges so it doesn’t look to be plated.

Beautiful antique Chinese soapstone figure of a Luohan dressed in long robes, holding ruyi sceptre in his left hand and his right hand slightly raised in front of his chest. Depicted standing on a rocky base that is carved out of the same stone (not a separate piece attached from underneath). Stylistically consistent with 17th-18th century, early Qing dynasty, examples by artists such as Yang Yuxuan, Wei Rufen or Zhou Bin. Height: 10 cm.

Fine Chinese Antique Enamelled Silver Dishes Late Qing Republic Marked BAO ZHEN

Nice pair of antique Chinese enamelled silver dishes featuring stylized Shou characters in the middle surrounded by bats and cartouches with prunus, peony, lotus and bamboo, symbolizing the four seasons. Each stamped 宝珍 ‘Bao Zhen’. There are no purity marks but judging by the weight and tarnishing likely a higher grade silver. Combined weight: 91.9 grams. Diameter: 8.5 cm.

Eight Auspicious Signs (bajixiang). Base marked with apocrpyhal Xuande mark. We couldn’t find one similar to it for reference but judging by the patina likely a Qing dynasty example. Fantastic scholar’s object for a collection! Height: 9.5 cm. Diameter: 14 cm (18 cm handle to handle). Weight approximately 1.55 kg.

RARE Chinese Antique Clobbered Blue and White Trench Mortar Porcelain Dish 18thC

Rare 18th century Chinese blue and white porcelain dish decorated with a rural scene and unusual looking house, commonly referred to as ‘Pearl River House’, ‘Malayan Village’ or ‘Trench Mortar’ pattern (this pattern also inspired several English transfer-printed versions produced at the end of the 18th century by various factories including New Hall, Spode and Worcester). Dish was later decorated (‘clobbered’) in England with vibrant polychrome overglaze enamels featuring floral sprays and a dragon. Base is marked with a pseudo-Chinese iron red mark. Diameter: 21 cm.

Interesting set of three heavily cast Chinese brass stirrups with chased decoration featuring dragons surrounded by geometric and foliate designs. Each stamped CHINA to the base. Intended either as decorative items or small dishes of sorts. Height: largest is 13 cm tall, smallest is around 8 cm tall.

Chinese Vintage PRoC Porcelain Figural Lamp Base Lu Mengzheng Broken Kiln Opera

Great vintage Chinese porcelain lamp base dating to the third quarter of the 20th century (PRoC). Depicting figures from the opera ‘The Broken Kiln’, Lu Mengzheng and Liu Yue’e:

Lü Mengzheng went daily to Mulan Temple for alms meals, while Liu Yue’e subsisted on wild herbs. One day, upon returning home, Mengzheng saw a man’s footprints in the snow and mistakenly suspected his wife of infidelity. It was only through ‘Appraising the Snow and Discerning Tracks’ that he learned the footprints were left by someone sent by Liu Mao to deliver aid. Later, Lü Mengzheng studied diligently, went to the capital for the imperial examination, achieved the top rank of zhuangyuan (top graduate), and the couple was reunited.

Base stamped 广东枫溪 ‘Fengxi, Guangdong’. Height: 27.5 cm, height of the porcelain base itself is 21 cm.

Wonderful Japanese ceramic okimono depicting ‘Oni nenbutsu’ or demon in monk’s robes performing Buddhist winter training by banging a gong and repeating prayers. He is holding a sign that says 光陰如箭 ‘time flies like an arrow’. One of his horns is slightly shorter, showing his progress on the path towards enlightenment. Height: 11.5 cm.

Rare and quite unusual Chinese ink rubbing on paper featuring ‘Family Motto of Zhu Bailu’ (朱柏廬先生家訓), also known as ‘Zhu Bailu’s Maxims for Managing a Household’ (朱柏廬治家格言). Each depicted in the form of a seal and transcribed in traditional characters below. Very interesting piece for a scholar’s study. Antique Japanese Blue White Porcelain Prunus Jar by Kanzan Denshichi Kyoto 19thC

Rare antique 19th century Japanese blue and white porcelain jar with gilt overglaze decoration. Decorated in typical ‘cracked ice’ pattern with prunus blossom and bamboo leaves and signed in underglaze blue 大日本 幹山製 ‘Great Japan, Made by Kanzan’.

Kanzan Denshichi 幹山伝七 (1821-1890) established his workshop at the base of Kiyomizu-zaka and is thought to have been one of the first ceramicists in Kyoto to specialise in porcelain production. Kanzan experimented with Western pigments under Gottfried Wagener’s guidance, and his workshop is known for its painterly style. In 1881 during their visit to Japan, Queen Victoria’s grandsons: Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and Prince George, Duke of York (George V), visited Kanzan’s workshop in Kyoto where they bought a few pieces as well as attempting to make their own pieces on the lathe. Pieces by Kanzan may be found in the collections of the Sannomaru Shōzōkan (Museum of the Imperial Collections) and Imperial Banqueting Department of Japan’s Imperial Household Agency, Tokyo National Museum and Kyoto Prefectural Library and Archives. The Victoria and Albert Museum has a pair of vases displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876, a pair of ginger jars and four other small pieces.

Rare and beautifully detailed Imperial Jeweled Egg Chess Set designed by the famous House of Fabergé for Franklin Mint in the opulent tradition of Peter Carl Fabergé, goldsmith and jeweller to the czars of imperial Russia. The luxurious collector egg is painted with red and black enamels and lavishly accented with 22 carat gold, sterling silver and set with a rich red ruby. The egg opens to reveal a miniature chess board embellished with sterling silver. The 32 chess pieces are accented in either 22 carat gold or sterling silver. They can be stored in a drawer provided in the base of the egg.

Antique Indian Sikh Temple Token Guru Nanak Ji Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace

Rare antique Indian Sikh brass temple token of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Mounted as a pendant necklace with STERLING silver hallmark on the clasp.

Obverse: Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion, seated on a rug against a bolster (cylindrical cushion) under a tree. His wooden sandals (pehooae) in front and water pot (lota) on his side. His disciples, Bhai Mardana, seated playing the rebab (string musical instruments) and Bahi Bala, seated fanning Guru Nanak with respect with a fly whisk (chauri) which was usually made of peacock feathers. Reverse: Guru Gobind Singh seated on a rug with a bolster behind and a halo (a circle of light) radiating around his head. A lattice fence is at the back. The Guru is holding a wand on which is perched his hawk (Bajh). Inscription in Nagari above “Sat Kartar” (the True Creator).

Fine Antique Japanese Meiji Period Flambe Glazed Vase by Miyagawa Makuzu Kozan

Charming little Japanese vase covered in interesting green flambe glaze and signed 香山 ‘Kozan’, most likely referring to the famous Miyagawa ‘Makuzu’ Kozan I 宮川香山 (1842–1916) who experimented with this type of small forms and exotic glazes during the late 19th and early 20th century. Height: 8 cm.

For reference see collections of The British Museum, object A_1980-0514-3 (1980,0514.3) and collections of the V&A Museum, objects O493487 (C.228-1910) and O496030 (C.255-1910). Clare Pollard in her book ‘Master Potter of Meiji Japan’ dates similar style of his signature to the 1890s.
