There are no markings but is looks to be made out of high-grade silver (interior was left unpolished to show its original tarnishing).

Rare Antique Japanese Meiji Tokyo Export Porcelain Bamboo Pot Heinrich Ahrens Co

Rare antique Japanese Meiji period export porcelain pot by Ahrens Company founded in Tokyo in 1869, shortly after the Meiji Restoration, by a German/Prussian entrepreneur Heinrich Ahrens (died in Yokohama on October 18, 1886). Modelled as a section of a bamboo, decorated with relief-moulded flowers set against a cobalt blue background. Base marked with a book-shaped mark which reads 東京 アーレンス社 ‘Ahrens Co., Tokyo’ and with a very faint rectangular kiln mark above.

A similar pair of vases can be found in the Tetsuhito Tanabe Collection.

Each piece signed 満宝山枝栄造 ‘Made by Manpozan Guiei/Shiei’ which was studio name used from 1871 after the management of the Mikawachi kiln was transferred to Furukawa Uknichi/Choji and later in 1874 to Toyoshima Masaharu.
