Antique Japanese Blue White Porcelain Prunus Jar by Kanzan Denshichi Kyoto 19thC

Rare antique 19th century Japanese blue and white porcelain jar with gilt overglaze decoration. Decorated in typical ‘cracked ice’ pattern with prunus blossom and bamboo leaves and signed in underglaze blue 大日本 幹山製 ‘Great Japan, Made by Kanzan’.

Kanzan Denshichi 幹山伝七 (1821-1890) established his workshop at the base of Kiyomizu-zaka and is thought to have been one of the first ceramicists in Kyoto to specialise in porcelain production. Kanzan experimented with Western pigments under Gottfried Wagener’s guidance, and his workshop is known for its painterly style. In 1881 during their visit to Japan, Queen Victoria’s grandsons: Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, and Prince George, Duke of York (George V), visited Kanzan’s workshop in Kyoto where they bought a few pieces as well as attempting to make their own pieces on the lathe. Pieces by Kanzan may be found in the collections of the Sannomaru Shōzōkan (Museum of the Imperial Collections) and Imperial Banqueting Department of Japan’s Imperial Household Agency, Tokyo National Museum and Kyoto Prefectural Library and Archives. The Victoria and Albert Museum has a pair of vases displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876, a pair of ginger jars and four other small pieces.

Rare House Of Faberge Franklin Mint Imperial Jeweled Egg Chess Set

Rare and beautifully detailed Imperial Jeweled Egg Chess Set designed by the famous House of Fabergé for Franklin Mint in the opulent tradition of Peter Carl Fabergé, goldsmith and jeweller to the czars of imperial Russia. The luxurious collector egg is painted with red and black enamels and lavishly accented with 22 carat gold, sterling silver and set with a rich red ruby. The egg opens to reveal a miniature chess board embellished with sterling silver. The 32 chess pieces are accented in either 22 carat gold or sterling silver. They can be stored in a drawer provided in the base of the egg.

Complete with all 32 miniature chess pieces. Measures 22.5 cm tall.

Antique Indian Sikh Temple Token Guru Nanak Ji Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace

Rare antique Indian Sikh brass temple token of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Mounted as a pendant necklace with STERLING silver hallmark on the clasp.

Obverse: Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikh religion, seated on a rug against a bolster (cylindrical cushion) under a tree. His wooden sandals (pehooae) in front and water pot (lota) on his side. His disciples, Bhai Mardana, seated playing the rebab (string musical instruments) and Bahi Bala, seated fanning Guru Nanak with respect with a fly whisk (chauri) which was usually made of peacock feathers. Reverse: Guru Gobind Singh seated on a rug with a bolster behind and a halo (a circle of light) radiating around his head. A lattice fence is at the back. The Guru is holding a wand on which is perched his hawk (Bajh). Inscription in Nagari above “Sat Kartar” (the True Creator).

Antique Japanese Edo Period Ink on Paper Kano School Fan Painting by Yasutomo

Fabulous antique Japanese Edo period Kano school ink drawing on paper depicting bird perched on a rope, examining the scarecrow visible below. Accompanied by a poetic inscription and signature which appears to read 保友之 ‘by Yasutomo’ (alternative reading ‘Hoyu’) with two red seals which in seal script read 
保 ‘Yasu’ and 友 ‘tomo’. Dimensions: approx. 50×23 cm.

Collection of The Tottori University Library features a Kano school scroll painting with a very similar signature and seal 保友之印 and lists the full name of the artist as 永眠保友 (1802－1858).

Amazing antique Japanese Meiji period Ishime-yaki ‘sharkskin’ glazed pot by Takeuchi Chubei (竹内忠兵衛), featuring blossoming branches set against a characteristic blue and white gradient background. Base marked in iron red with typical patent number and signature of Takeuchi Chubei. Interior of the rim is unglazed so it originally likely had a cover. Could be used as a brush pot or planter. Fine Chinese Antique Robins Egg Glazed Porcelain Brush Pot Vase 19th-20th C

Absolutely stunning Chinese robins’ egg (lu Jun) glazed cylindrical vase or a small brush pot with incredibly intricate and consistent pattern all around which is very difficult to achieve. Photos don’t do it justice in my opinion – it truly feels like a precious gem when you hold it in your hand. Gorgeous scholar’s object. It’s hard to date these precisely but judging by the potting I wold say likely dating to the late 19th century or later. Height: 12 cm.

Rare Antique French Chinoiserie Chinese Style Inkwell by THEODORE DECK 1880-90

Beautiful late 19th century French ‘Chinoiserie’ inkwell produced by Théodore Deck (1823-1891) who started experimenting with this type of Chinese form in the 1880s. Modelled in the form of a square incense burner with foo lion head handles. Comes with original bronze mounts typical for this type of inkwells. Height: 10 cm including the mounts.

Fine Antique Japanese Meiji Period Flambe Glazed Vase by Miyagawa Makuzu Kozan

Charming little Japanese vase covered in interesting green flambe glaze and signed 香山 ‘Kozan’, most likely referring to the famous Miyagawa ‘Makuzu’ Kozan I 宮川香山 (1842–1916) who experimented with this type of small forms and exotic glazes during the late 19th and early 20th century. Height: 8 cm.

For reference see collections of The British Museum, object A_1980-0514-3 (1980,0514.3) and collections of the V&A Museum, objects O493487 (C.228-1910) and O496030 (C.255-1910). Clare Pollard in her book ‘Master Potter of Meiji Japan’ dates similar style of his signature to the 1890s.
