Marked to the base with impressed 香二 (Koko) mark inside a double gourd. This is one of the maker’s marks of Ishiguro Koko 石黒香々. Really unusual example of this potter’s work. Fascinating antique traditional Chinese medicine manuscript, meticulously handwritten and illustrated. Based on ‘Waike qixuan’ 外科啟玄 (‘Mysteries of External Ailments/Secrets of External Diseases’) by Shen Gongchen 申拱辰, originally published in 1604. Title is partially visible on the right edge of the first page from the back (see the last photo). Contains 85 pages with 82 illustrations, explaining origins of numerous ailments and how to treat them. Likely a late Qing dynasty example. Book measures approximately 20.2×12.5 cm.

The inscription records the erection of a statue of Śākyamuni Buddha donated by Wei Lingcang and Xue Fashao: 敢輒磬家財造石像一區凡及眾形罔不備列願乾祚興延万万朝貫願藏等挺三槐於孤峰秀九蕀於華苑芳實再繁. Antique bronze/brass sukunda, a ritual oil lamp used by the Newar people of the Kathmandu valley. Rare example with handle in the form of a foo lion, and Lord Ganesha facing the dalupa (lamp dish). Surface has been at some point polished but remnants of original dark patina are still visible in places. Prominent age-related wear with some minor losses (tail of the foo lion, reduced foot rim). Antique Japanese 19th C Meiji Calligraphy on Paper by Oka Sankyo 岡三橋 (1832-1894)

Rare early Meiji period calligraphy on paper by Oka Sankyō (岡三橋 or おかさんきょう, 1832-1894), native of Choshu and samurai skilled both in martial arts and calligraphy. He studied under Yoshida Shōin at the Shōkasonjuku Academy (松下村塾) and later became the Cabinet Secretary of Japan. Panel is signed with his seals 三橋, 岡氏 and 雨香. Great piece of history, nicely framed and glazed. Dimensions: frame measures 55.5×25 cm; visible area of the artwork 43×13 cm.
