Fantastic set of three Tsakli Buddhist initiation cards representing seated Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), Indra (playing his lute) and Vemacitra (holding his sword and shield). Ritual Tsakli cards of this type were traditionally used by Tibetan Buddihst masters during initiations and empowerment ceremonies. They are known in Mongolia as Burhany Zurag and were often used as centerpieces in their portable shrines (Gau). Each card is fully inscribed with Tibetan script on the reverse.

Distinct discoloration and great surface patina indicating that these cards have been heavily used in the past.
 
Each card measures approx. 10×9 cm

Date of production: 19th century or earlier
Materials: polychrome pigments on mulberry paper
