Rare antique smear-glazed stoneware jug with relief-moulded decoration against a white stippled background. Hand-painted branches with prunus blossoms and bamboo motifs in low relief all around with handle moulded and painted to resemble a branch. Wonderful piece of Japanese-influenced Victorian pottery produced in Staffordshire during Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century.
Diamond registration mark to the base dated November, 1877. Hand-painted inscription 9287 M. Original pewter lid stamped ‘James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield’ inside.
Jug is in good antique condition with surface wear and minor loss of enamels commensurate with age. There is a very faint hairline to the base that seems to be original to the piece as the glaze over it isn’t disturbed.
