A pair of Mandarin civil rank badges – Mandarin squares – embroidered with gilt and metallic thread woven with couched details against a dark metallic ground. Badges depict golden Quails perched on a rock above the sea of rolling waves, surrounded by Ashtamangala – eight auspicious Buddhist symbols – and facing red sun on the left-hand side of the badge (male badge). Sun disks are made out of coiled threads of precious red coral beads. Scene is set against a background of tightly woven ruyi head clouds and framed by the border of alternating auspicious Shou characters and bats.
