Fantastic Meiji period portable shrine (zushi) with black lacquered exterior and two hinged doors opening to reveal a gilt-lacquered wooden figure of Amida Nyorai (阿弥陀如来) in long flowing monk’s robes standing atop a five-tiered lotus throne. With serene expression on his face and his hands in vitarka mudra (Raigō-in), he welcomes souls into the Pure Land of bliss (Sukhavati). Very nicely carved, gilded and further embellished with hand-painted polychrome decoration.
