Large Antique Indian Wood Carving of Hindu Mythical Lion Yali. South India, 18th – 19th century

Beautifully aged antique Indian panel carved from a single piece of wood and depicting mythical Hindu lion Yali (Vyala) with an upraised paw. Depictions of this ferocious creature are often carved into pillars and walls of Hindu temples as it is considered a powerful protective force guarding these religious sites. Descriptions of and references to Yalis in Hinduism are very old, but they became prominent in South Indian sculpture in the 16th century.

In very good antique condition with surface wear, patina and minor tension cracks consistent with age.
