Very beautiful blue-ground porcelain vase by Meiji artist Takeuchi Chubei decorated in unusual textured ‘sharkskin’ glaze (鮫肌釉). Depicting an auspicious scene with a squirrel among grapevines. The combination of squirrels and grapes is a popular visual rebus in both Chinese and Japanese art and its meaning can be metaphorically translated as a wish for ‘abundance in fortune and offspring’. Base inscribed with characteristic Takeuchi Sei patent number in underglaze blue.
In excellent condition with only minor rubbing to the gilding around the rim.
Height: 24.5 cm
