Fine Antique Japanese Meiji Period Flambe Glazed Vase by Miyagawa ‘Makuzu’ Kozan

Charming little Japanese vase covered in interesting green flambe glaze and signed 香山 ‘Kozan’, most likely referring to the famous Miyagawa ‘Makuzu’ Kozan I 宮川香山 (1842–1916) who experimented with this type of small forms and exotic glazes during the late 19th and early 20th century.

For reference see collections of The British Museum, object A_1980-0514-3 (1980,0514.3) and collections of the V&A Museum, objects O493487 (C.228-1910) and O496030 (C.255-1910). Clare Pollard in her book ‘Master Potter of Meiji Japan’ dates similar style of his signature to the 1890s.
