Beautiful lacquered 19th century Chinese export lidded box with hand-painted decoration all around. Paintings depict scenes from daily life set against black ground and traditional Chinese architecture painted in gilt. Judging from its shape and size, this is possibly a converted sewing box that has lost its fitted trays or an original storage box of the same design. Wonderful genuine China trade export item that is both decorative and functional.
Box is in good antique condition consistent with age. Several small areas of missing lacquer along the edges as per photographs. Hinges have been replaced. Construction is solid with no loose parts. Complete condition report is available upon request. Comes without a key.
