Authentic late 18th century South Indian hardwood panel from traditional ceremonial chariot celebrated during Ratha Utchavam – Hindu temple festival associated with numerous temples of Shiva, Shakti and Vishnu across India. Carved in deep relief, this panel depicts two male figures with crossed arms and each holding a club. Above them is a traditional ornamental representation of the protective deity Kirtimukha. Wonderful patina with remnants of original black and blue pigments. Great piece of decorative Asian art ready to hang on the wall.
Good condition consistent with age and usage. Made out of a solid piece of hard and heavy wood. Weathered surface and loss of original pigments due to exposure to the elements over the centuries. Small area of water staining near the base and one larger chip on the left side of the pedestal. Complete condition report available upon request.
