Captivating mask from the Middle Hills of Nepal. Dark surface patina traditionally created by coating the wood with yak fat and charring it over a fire. Primitive masks of this type were either ceremonial – used in shamanic rituals for channelling local gods / demons through the shaman – or protective – hung in the house or over the door to ward off evil spirits. This mask represents spirit with both human and animal features. Moustache is made out of animal hair. Nepalese customs wax seal.
Mask is in reasonable antique condition consistent with age. Judging by its wear and patina, it must have been used regularly. Most of the chips and cracks seem to be old. There is one fresh chip on the reverse and a couple of age-related tensions cracks as per photographs. Complete condition report is available upon request.
